Programming languages and robotics

✦ Lesson 2

Programming languages and robotics

People don't write long strings of 0s and 1s. Programmers use programming languages: sets of words and rules that the computer then changes into binary code. Learning one is like learning any language: you need to know its words and its grammar.

🧩 Scratch

A programming language for kids: you join coloured blocks to make games and animations. Try it online with an adult!

⌨️ C++

A language that professional programmers use to write games, apps and the programs inside machines.

Robotics

Robotics is the science of making machines that work automatically: they do a job without someone telling them how each time. Every robot has a computer inside, so robotics scientists have two jobs:

  1. 1
    🔧 Build the machine

    Design and make the robot's body so it can do the job.

  2. 2
    💻 Write the program

    Code the instructions that tell the machine how to do the job.

🚗 Remember Unit 5?

In car factories, robots weld car parts together all day. They do it because a program tells them exactly how to move.
