What is a desert?
Deserts are very dry places that get very little or no precipitation (water that falls to the ground as rain or snow) during the year. Not all deserts are hot! In a desert you can find sand, rocks… or even snow.
Often covered with sand. The wind blows the sand into low hills called dunes. You can also find dunes near the seashore, because it is very windy there.
Large areas of land covered with rocks or snow. The North and South Poles are deserts. Antarctica is the largest desert in the world: it gets only about 15 cm of precipitation a year.
The Atacama Desert in South America is the driest place on Earth. In some parts it has not rained for years!
