Mark up a long text

A long text is easier to understand if you mark it up: highlight the important ideas, underline dates and names, and write questions or notes in the margin. Look at this example.

The story of the telephone
Long ago, the only way to send a message far away was to write a letter. In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell made the first telephone call. At first, telephones were big and fixed to the wall, and people had to ask an operator to connect their calls. Later came mobile phones, which you could carry in your pocket. Today, smartphones are small computers: we use them to talk, take photos and go on the internet.
